The Saint Mary’s Secondary School in Accra has recorded four armed robberies since the beginning of last term. The school’s watchmen were not spared- two of them sustained severe cutlass wounds in the latest attack, which occurred last two weeks. Furthermore, there were frequent thefts.
The Acting Headmistress, Mrs Victoria Opoku, disclosed these at the 52nd speech and prize-giving day in Accra at the weekend. In view of the situation, she said that some of the watchmen had resigned because they felt threatened by the constant attacks on them. “Property worth millions of cedis have so far been stolen from the dormitories and staff bungalows, while other assets were damaged,” Mrs Opoku stated.
She, therefore, appealed to the government to help them to beef up their security in order to ensure the safety of the students. The situation, according to the Acting Headmistress, had been reported to the Korle-Bu Police who were now providing security to the school.
