Accra, Jan. 13, GNA - A staff of Tema Branch of Merchant Bank, who absconded to Togo with 700 million cedis belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana has been arrested with the assistance of Interpol.
Mr Prosper Agblor, Head of Interpol Accra, told the Ghana News Agency that Solomon Adofo Nyarko, 40, who hailed from Abetifi in the Eastern Region, was arrested at Agbavi, a town on the border between Benin and Togo.
He said Nyarko was in charge of the sales of prepaid-meter customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana at Tema. Mr Agblor, who is also an Assistant Commissioner of Police, said on October 4, 2004, Nyarko vacated his post and this raised the suspicion of his employers.
He said the Bank ordered the auditing of his accounts and it came out that more than 700 million cedis could not be accounted for. Mr Agblor said his outfit got a tip-off that Nyarko had been spotted at Agbavi and with the collaboration from the Togolese Security; they arrested and brought him to Accra.
He said the Police had the capability to reach out and apprehend criminals wherever they tried to seek refuge.
