Following President John Dramani Mahama's address at the 80th United Nations General Assembly Meeting, where he castigated the West, a video has emerged of Colonel Ignatius Kutu Acheampong warning Ghanaians about the interests of Western countries.

In the said video, the late Colonel Acheampong, who was Ghana’s second military leader, is heard cautioning the country's media against feeding the Western media with information about the country.

He said that the West has no interest in the development of Ghana because they do not want the country to rise to their level.

“We are not saying that those who contribute articles to the foreign press are not patriotic. We are not saying that, at least you can earn some foreign exchange when you go on holiday, you go to a nice hotel and enjoy yourself. What we are saying is that don't destroy your country. If you know what you are writing is wrong, don't do it because you do your country more harm than good.

“And this is all the foreign press wants. They don't want any developing country to come up to their standard. This, you must accept. And once they can use you to destroy your own country, so much the better for them,” he said.

He further stated that; “But if any journalist continues — those who we are talking about very soon — I ask the Commissioner for NRC Affairs to read a gist of what they have done. And you agree with me? Some of them were given several warnings. The moment you give a warning, that warning appears on either the BBC or in a paper overseas."

Colonel Acheampong pointed out that the actions of the media were only hurting Ghana and helping the agenda of the West to destroy the country.

“We are saying that you are free to write whatever you want. You can criticise the government. Then we will set up, but don't destroy. See, when you know what you are writing is wrong, it isn't true and it's meant to subvert, to create disaffection, to create competition in the country, then you are doing more harm than good. Because if the country collapses, you are within it.

“It doesn't collapse for me or for my colleagues. All of us are inside, just like people travelling on a ship. If the ship sinks, we all sink. If the ship sinks, we all sink with it. This is what most of them don't understand. They think they are outside the government. The government is a separate entity somewhere. If it is destroyed, fine,” he fumed.
