The Kpone Organised Youth for Development in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly has asked government to as matter of urgency close down the Kpone landfill site and look for an alternative dumpsite.

The youth stated this when they embarked on a demonstration against the continuous dumping of refuse at the Kpone landfill site.

Clad in red, the youth converged at the entrance of the dumpsite and prevented trucks from dumping refuse at the site.

According to one of leaders of the Group, Nii Noi Tetteh, Kpone cannot continue to suffer as a result of the presence of the landfill site.

Apart from the stench and smoke that emanate from the place, contaminated water from the site has been allowed to flow into open gutters and the Kpone lagoon downstream killing all fishes and other aquatic animals in the lagoon.

He said even though Kpone has offered its lands for various national projects, the community is neglected when it comes to development projects.

Mr. Tetteh explained that for about 50 years the area has been used as dumpsite exposing them to various kinds of diseases.

He explained engagements with key stakeholders on the issue have not yielded any result, adding that, the Sanitation Ministry has failed in its assurance of closing down the dumpsite by the end of February 2020.

He therefore called for the immediate closure of the landfill site.

The youth with the protection of the police walked through the main Kpone township road to protest against the dumping at the site.

They carried placards some of which read ‘the stench is killing us’, ‘Kpone is no longer safe’, ‘Kpone roads are bad’, a clean Ghana begins with shutting down hazardous kpone dumpsite, and Stop polluting our lagoons.
