A private legal practitioner, Maurice Ampaw, is cautioning Police officers fond of having sex with arrested prostitutes in exchange of their freedom to desist from the reprehensible act or risked being exposed to public ridicule in some few days to come.

According to Lawyer Ampaw, he finds it so disturbing why a Police officer will go ahead to take a bribe or demand for sex in exchange of one’s freedom after arresting commercial sex workers.

Such act, he noted, must immediately cease.

Interacting with Prince Baffour Awuah on Accra-based Kasapa 102.5 FM last Thursday, Lawyer Ampaw said it will serve the men and women in black uniform good by prosecuting commercial sex workers whenever they are arrested.

“Those Police officers involved in this act must try as much as possible to refrain from it else very soon the girls are going to mention their names and shame them in public”, he noted.

The behavior of the Police, he said, is as a result of the soft punishment that is slapped on commercial sex workers by the court whenever they are arrested and prosecute.

“The punishment that goes with prostitution is so lenient. The Judges have decided that they will not jail anybody when it comes to commercial sex related matters and so they normally fine the culprits like GHS1,000 or GHS500 or GHS 200 or at most GHS1, 500. So, with this the Police have come to the conclusion that the amount is too small and so they will either take bribe from those arrested and let them go or have sex in exchange of their freedom”, Lawyer Ampaw explained.
