Stop pressuring police to drop cases - Afia Tenge

The Ghana Police Service has urged the public, particularly influential individuals, to stop coercing the law enforcement body to drop certain cases.

Accra Regional Police PRO, Afia Tenge, said individuals who flout laws and regulations must be made to face the law to deter others from such offences.

Speaking on Class91.3FM’s Executive Breakfast Show on Tuesday, June 6, she revealed that police personnel receives numerous calls from the clergy, chiefs, and politicians among others to discontinue criminal cases, a situation she said does not help the cause of justice.

“There is a lot of cover-up syndrome in the system. Who is expected to receive this punishment and who is not? Somebody commits a crime and the issue is… ‘Oh, he is my brother so help me solve it.’ Politicians are calling, chiefs are calling…and you see fathers coming, uncles, etc. and you end up dissolving the case,” she explained.

“So it means when I commit an offence and I don’t have anybody, it means I will be punished.”

She explained that police officers are there to perform their duties, so if an individual will call people in authority to intervene, then “the police should go to sleep because they will not be able to check the lawlessness in society”.

ASP Tenge challenged the public to be law-abiding and ensure that they always do the right thing whether there is police presence or not.

For her, there is something fundamentally wrong with Ghanaian society and it is time for every individual to show more responsibility to bring down crime so the country develops.
