Security Analyst, Kwesi Aning
Government and all stakeholders in charge of security in the country must stop the talk and implement long term interventions to deal with the surge in crime in the country, Security Analyst, Dr Kwesi Aning, has said.
According to him, the country, has over the years adopted only ad hoc measures in dealing with crime, a situation he believes does not augur well for the security of Ghanaians.
He said this in reaction to the heightened insecurity in the country including daylight robberies in some parts of the Greater Accra region.
Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of the Ghana Yensom show on Accra 100.5FM on Friday, 2 March 2018, Dr Aning said: “It is not surprising, it won’t stop today, it won’t stop tomorrow. Almost all governments have set up commissions of inquiry to find out how to improve Policing in Ghana but all the recommendations that were made were not implemented.
“It started from 1959, all the way to 1986 when JJ Rawlings asked Justice Archer to look at the state of policing in Ghana. Archer made several recommendations and the Rawlings administration issued a government paper. One of the recommendations was that by 1991 we should have 40,000 Police officers.
“But if you look at our population in 1991 with the 40,000 police officers requirement, then you compare to the population in 2018 with 33,000, it means we haven’t acted seriously towards the problem. We do things in an ad hoc manner, the talk is too much. We like talking more than making the interventions that will bring about substantive and quantifiable change. We need to stop the talk and act.”
