George Ayisi, Director of Communications for The National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO and a member of the NPP’s communications team, has called for an end to misinformation and a focus on verifiable data to address unemployment.

Mr. Ayisi made these remarks in an interview on GHOne TV hosted by Serwaa Amihere. He emphasized the need for accurate representation of data, stating, “You need to have, the numbers. I mean, I need data.”

He acknowledged the impact of banking sector reform and anti-galamsey efforts on job losses, saying, “When we came in, we embarked on the banking sector reform. So, definitely, some people lost jobs.”

Regarding job creation, Ayisi cited the example of 200,000 nurses recruited since 2017 and referenced Dr. Bawumia’s statement on 2.3 million jobs created during the manifesto launch. “Dr. Bawumia, at the present launch of the manifesto, mentioned about 2.3 million jobs created.”

Mr. Ayisi explained that galamsey, although illegal, was a source of income for many young people. “Galamsey was a job. Yes, they were mining. So, when you ask him, he will tell you he has a job.” He emphasized that these individuals would report themselves as employed during statistical surveys.

Mr. Ayisi urged for a focus on facts rather than propaganda. “This propaganda trajectory, let’s stop it.” He emphasized the need for constructive conversation, saying, “You see, when you are carrying out a survey, okay? A young man who carries loads and coal. If you ask him, he’ll say I’m a porter. I earn something.”

Ultimately, Ayisi stressed the importance of accurate data and honest dialogue in addressing unemployment. By focusing on facts and acknowledging the complexities of the issue, Ghana can work towards finding solutions to this pressing problem.
