Stoppages at point of entries bound to happen

Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Gloria Akuffo has warned that stoppages of NDC functionaries and officials at the country’s point of entries “are bound to come up” since investigations are on-going.

Ms. Akuffo said it is extremely important for the NDC officials and functionaries to remain in the country and help the investigations because it is in the public interest for them to answer for their stewardship.

She was reacting to the NDC’s recently announced decision not to co-operate with the various investigation committees.

The deputy Attorney-General said although the NDC has the right to refuse to answer questions, they will be subverting the law if they refuse to appear before such constitutionally-established bodies, adding “they are digging their own grave.”

Ms. Akuffo was speaking on a current affairs programme in Accra.

The NDC Spokesman on Legal and Constitutional Affairs and MP for Kumbugu, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni MP accused the ruling NPP of suffering from what he called “fixation of the past.”

He explained that the NDC will appear before the various investigation committees but will not answer incriminatory questions. He said some of the questions are skewed deliberately to embarrass them and so they will not co-operate.

Hon. Mumuni admitted that ministers, officials and functionaries of the former government have a duty to account for their stewardship “but there is no good fate in the whole matter” and so they have to advise themselves.

Meanwhile, government spokesman, Kwabena Agyepong has said that the NDC’s letter to the President lacks substance, hence government’s failure to respond to it. He said the NDC members are behaving like kids whose toys have been taken away from them.

The party wrote a letter to the President chronicling alleged cases of harassment and intimidation from the government and the security agencies and called on the president to address the issue. Government has since not responded to the letter. The NDC has lashed at the President and his government for the failure to respond to its letter.
