Street carnivals herald NPP election victory

Sekondi, Dec. 10, GNA - The twin city of Sekondi-Takoradi was awakened with thunderous shouts of jubilation followed by street carnivals by thousands of NPP supporters, when the Electoral Commission last night declared President Kufuor and the ruling party as the winners of the December 7 general elections.

The jubilation saw taxis, private and other vehicle drivers tooting their horns loud and continuously, while party faithfuls dressed in party colours and regalia, sang and danced for the rest of the night. Earlier in the day, there were mixed feelings and many people became apprehensive for what they said was undue delay in officially announcing the winner of the elections.

The situation became even more confusing, when Mr Bede Ziedeng, the NDC Deputy General Secretary at a press conference in Accra spoke about alleged election irregularities in some constituencies and many people wondered what would happen next.

Therefore, the declaration of the winner by the EC came as relief to many, who had earlier congratulated themselves and the EC for conducting free and fair elections.

The NPP won convincingly in both the Presidential and Parliamentary elections in all the five constituencies in the Metropolis, namely Shama, Takoradi, Essikado-Ketan, Sekondi and Effia-Kwesimintsim. There are reports of wild jubilation in other constituencies in the region, where the NPP won 12 out of the 22 constituencies. The NDC won in eight and the CPP, two constituencies.
