Striking Teachers urged to go back to classroom

Berekum (B/A), June 16, GNA- Mr. Kwabena Kyere-Yeboah, Berekum District Chief Executive on Tuesday appealed to teachers in the area who embarked on a demonstration to back their demand for Cap 30 pension scheme to go back to the classrooms because it is the innocent children who are suffering.

He was addressing about 700 teachers in the district at the forecourt of the District Assembly after their demonstration. There were no classes in all the public schools in the district that day.

The teachers, wearing red dresses and red bands on their heads and arms paraded through the principal streets of the town holding placards some of which read, "No Cap 30, No School", "What is good for the goose is also good for the gander".

Mr. Kyere-Yeboah, however, congratulated the teachers for conducting the demonstration in a peaceful manner and gave the assurance that their grievances would be communicated to the appropriate quarters.

Mr. Joseph Edward Nyamekye, Berekum District GNAT Secretary, expressed regret that teachers had been denied due recognition as producers of literates.

He called on the Government to respond to the petition of teachers and address the problem.

Mrs. Belinda S. Addo, District Director of Education, also appealed to the teachers to resume classes while their grievances were addressed.
