The Dean of students at the University of Ghana, Dr Vladmir Andwi-Danso, has described as uncalled for the demonstration embarked upon by some students of the University last Monday.

He said, the demonstration was unnecessary because SSNIT, earlier on, had stated that the monies were being paid. And if they were going to send a petition to the Ministry of Education, there was no earthly reason why a whole mob should go to the Ministry to present the petition.

Academic Board Suspends Interim Assessment

The Authorities of the University Of Ghana have decided to suspend all interim assessment examinations.

The Dean of students at the University of Ghana, Dr Vladimir Antwi-Danso has stated in an interview with Peace fm that the decision to suspend the interim assessment examinations was taken to protect the integrity of the University Examinations and that of the students.

Dr Antwi-Danso said, the Academic Board is the highest authority where academic issues are concerned on the University campus. And their decisions are only subjected to ratification by the University Council. He said the decision to suspend the interim assessment by the Academic board whose membership is made up of all full professors and heads of the various departments was taken in good faith.

He emphasized that the decision was taken to protect the integrity of the University examinations and also, the students. Dr Antwi-Danso outlined some reasons why the interim assessment was suspended. He said, it was being subjected to abuse; it was ineffective and it was not serving the purpose for which it was established.

He reiterated that suspending the interim assessment does not mean students may not be assessed within the semester. Adding that a lecturer can still give various forms of examinations, which are not going to be recorded as part of the examination process in the interim to enable students know how they are progressing.

He said, the student numbers have increased and lecturers are over-burdened. And therefore, before a lecturer finishes making over 1500 ?IAS?, the semester had ended. This problem makes it impossible for some of the results that are needed before students move to the next level to be ready. Teaching Assistants were being used to arrest the situation, but a lot of fraud was observed
