Student Leaders Certificates To Be Withheld

Kumasi 24th March, 2007 - Departmental and faculty executives within the College of Arts and Social Sciences at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) who had embezzled funds belonging to their association would have their certificates withheld until they had refunded all the funds belonging to associations.

This was made known by Professor Dr. Dr K Obour, the Provost of College of Arts and Social Sciences at the handing over and swearing in ceremony of the new executives of the KNUST Law Students’ Union (LSU).

Professor Dr. Dr. Obour admonished the new executives to abide by the constitution of their association and also exhibit high sense of financial transparency in their administration. He warned that students’ leadership is not an avenue of making wealth but rather warehouse of preparing and training good leaders for the nation. However, he was full of praise for the outgoing President of the Union for exhibiting sterling qualities during his tenure of office and hoped that the new executives will emulate the pace that has been set.

On his part, the Ashanti Regional President of Ghana Bar Association (GBA) Mr. Anthony Osei Poku urged the students that it is a bad practice in the legal profession to discuss in the media a case pending before court. He urged presenters of radio programs to desist from calling lawyers to find their opinion on a case pending before court. He said that cases could be discussed or commented in the media only when the judgment has been given or dismissed by the court. Mr. Stephen Azantilow the outgoing President of the Union enumerated some of the achievements chalked under his administration over the past year. He said that the Union played its role very well as a watch dog of governance in both the students’ council and the university administration. He cited a case a where a law student challenged the university on the declaration of state of emergency on campus. He made reference to efforts made by the Union to engender interest in programmes of the Faculty and the activities of the Union through the introduction of a newsletter and the launching of website and called on students to show more interest in the affairs of the faculty

The new leaders who were elected last year, has Miss Diana Asonaba Dapaah as President and Miss Kakra Eleanor Barnars as Vice-President with Miss Ellene Maclean, as Secretary.

The rest are Mss Victoria Chinere, Organizing and Margaret Ohenewa as the treasurer
