Student arraigned for abetment

One Johnson David, a student, was on Tuesday put before an Accra Circuit Court for preparing to commit crime and abetment of crime.

Johnson was alleged to have prepared to commit crime to wit robbery and aided and abetted one Seidu and Aminu both at large to commit crime to wit causing harm.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges but was however remanded by the court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri to reappear on October 13.

Presenting the facts of the case, Police Inspector Kwabena Adu, told the court that the complainant is a police Sergeant stationed at the Ministry of Interior as the dispatch rider to the Minister and a resident of Kasoa.

He said Johnson is a student, half Ghanaian and half Burkinabe. On September 15, at about 2100 hours, the complainant had closed from his day’s work and was on his way home on his police motorbike.

On reaching Amanfro, he spotted the accused person and his two accomplices, now at large, on an unregistered royal motorbike which he suspected to be a stolen one, heading towards Kasoa.

The prosecution told the court that the third accused person, Aminu, was carrying a bag at his back, which made the complainant suspicious. On the way the complainant met a police/military patrol team and informed them about his suspicion.

He said the unregistered motorbike was being driven by the first accused person, Johnson.

Police Inspector Adu said the complainant together with the patrol team followed up on the accused persons, with the complainant taking the lead to trail them.

He said upon reaching the Goil Filling station after the toll booth, he ordered the accused persons to stop but Aminu ordered Johnson not to stop. The complainant sped up and crossed the accused persons on their way and stopped them.

He said the second and third accused persons Seidu and Aminu got down from the motorbike. The complainant then held Johnson and instructed Aminu to submit the bag behind him for inspections but he stepped back with the bag and shot the left thigh of the complainant and they all bolted.

According to the prosecution, the patrol team got near the scene and gave them a hot chase and in the course Johnson was arrested.

The complainant was rushed to the Ga South hospital but was referred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and was treated and discharged.

He said the scene of the crime was visited and upon a search conducted, an empty shell of a foreign made pistol was found at the scene. Investigations are still ongoing to arrest the two accomplices.
