ONE person died on the spot while two others sustained serious injuries when a taxi ran into a group of students of the Jukwa Secondary School, near Cape Coast, last Friday.

The body of the deceased, Frank Yao, 18, a form one student, has been deposited at the Cape Coast Regional Hospital mortuary, while the injured are receiving treatment at the same hospital.

The driver of the taxi, with registration number WR 1827 Q, Ebenezer Amissah, is in the custody of the Jukwa Police.

The incident occurred when the students were on their way home from school.

An eyewitness said the taxi, which was travelling at top speed from Cape Coast towards Jukwa, veered off its course into the opposite lane.

It said in an attempt to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle, it ran into the students, who were walking along the road.

The Headmistress of the school, Ms Regina Amam, said following the damage caused to the boys’ hostel last year when the roof was ripped, most of the students have been compelled to rent rooms in town.

She said since the school has no vehicle to transport the students, the majority of them walk to and from the school over a distance of more than six kilometres.

Ms Amam said apart from exposing the students to various dangers, the situation has made it difficult to effectively monitor the activities of students after school.

She appealed to the Ministry of Education and philanthropists to come to the aid of the school.
