Student's leaders condemned violent demonstrations

Koforidua, Dec. 21, GNA - Regional heads of Students Representative Councils (SRC) have condemned violent demonstrations to resolve issues confronting students and advocated the use of dialogue.

Addressing the first National Conference of Regional Heads of SRCs at Koforidua on Saturday, the Chairman of the Conference, Mr. Daniel Mantey, said a National SRC would be formed to champion the cause of students.

He noted that, it was high time leaders of SRCs met to see how best they could discuss and redeem the fallen moral standard and discipline in schools

Mr. Mantey urged students to apply their knowledge in handling situations that would be beneficial to themselves and the country instead of "causing disasters through unacceptable behaviour" in schools.

He observed that, students as future leaders of the country had to influence national issues and wondered how students "could create troubles that attract national attention but could not influence the educational institutions that mould their future".

The conference attended by twenty representatives of SRCs from all the ten regions was under the theme "SRC - An Effective Tool for National Development".

The Deputy Eastern Regional Director of Education, Mr. Samuel Acuaye, who represented the Regional Director called on students to begin to influence national development by contributing to the production of goods and services using the knowledge they have acquired in their various elective courses, saying, "Students of agriculture can produce foodstuffs for their own school kitchen".

He noted that this would enable them to appreciate the benefit of the subjects they were learning.

Mr. Acquaye advised students to be patriotic and do away with the violence, which "draw education back" and commended the SRC for organizing the conference to discuss issues that affected the attitude of students towards national development.
