Students go on solidarity walk

The National Executive Council of the Private Universities’ Students Association of Ghana (PUSAG) on Friday went on a solidarity walk in support of the abducted girls in Nigeria by Islamic militant group, Boko Haram.

The walk, dubbed: “Bring Back Our Girls,” started from the Accra Girls Senior High School, through some principal streets of Accra and ended at the Nigeria High Commission, where the students converged and presented their petition.

The petition, read by Mr. Benjamin Pan logo-Logodam, President of the Association, stated that the girls abducted are students, therefore, as a student body and an Association in Ghana, it was necessary to add their voice to the campaign.

Mr. Panlogo-Logodam said activities of the militant group were not only a Nigerian problem, but also a global threat which must be approached with care to save the future.

He said tertiary institutions and the youth of Nigeria must unite to champion the ‘bring our girls back’ crusade to help authorities locate the abducted girls.

Mr. Panlogo-Logodam said the youth should not take sides, politically or religiously, in ensuring that this campaign becomes successful.

The President, therefore, called on all African governments and opposition leaders to desist from using the youth as a tool to propagate their destructive and divisive political agenda, but rather equip them positively as future leaders.

Mr. Abraham Poko, Minister at the Nigeria High Commission who received the petition on behalf of the Nigerian High Commissioner, commended the group for the initiative and solidarity of supporting the people of Nigeria in this crucial time.

He said the petition will be delivered to the highest authority and also assured the Association that the girls would be found and brought back alive.

He said the Nigerian government knew the best strategies to be used in getting these girls back.

Mr. Okafor said the militant group are young people, hence called on the youth, both in Ghana, Nigeria and Africa as a continent, to stay away from terrorism.
