Suhum, Feb 16, GNA - Five hundred students of the Suhum Presbyterian Senior High School (SHS) are studying under trees and in a dining hall, the Headmaster of the school, Mr Emmanuel Danso, told the GNA on Wednesday. He said this at the presentation of books, electrical bulbs and bibles t= o the school.

The items were donated by Mr Jonathan Tetteh Asare, Agricultural Science Tutor of the school and also District Officer of the Ghana Red Cros= s Society.

The occasion also coincided with the presentation of awards to two students of the school, Master Abraham Adjah and Stephen Senyo Tetheygafor, for emerging winners of the 54th Independence Day debate competition held i= n Koforidua last year.

Out of the 15 Districts that participated in the programme, Suhum Presbyterian SHS came second.

Mr Danso said the school was established in 1991, but lacked several amenities including classrooms, school bus, dormitories and good science laboratory.

He said lack of good infrastructure was hampering effective teaching and learning in the school.

Mr Danso said most of the students were staying in the surrounding villages and had to travel long distances to the school.

He mentioned a sad case where Vida Tetteh, a second year student, was murdered last year when she was trekking through the bush to school. Mr Asare said the school had no farm because of lack of land and that all attempts to acquire land for the school failed.

He said last year teachers in the school out of their own resources constructed a block of three classrooms up to the window level whiles the Suhum Kraboa Coaltar District Assembly also donated roofing sheets. He appealed to the government, Ghana Education Service, non-governmental organizations to assist the school to rehabilitate its four- storey building classroom blocks abandoned eight years ago.
