Sudan pays tribute to Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah

Accra, Jan. 19, GNA - Dr Mustafa Osman, Special Advisor to the Sudanese President, Omer Hassan Ahmed Al-Bashir on Monday paid tribute to the memory of Ghana's First President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah. "Sudan hold Ghana's first President in high esteem, the great Pan Africanist was son of the continent not only Ghana, and the Government and people of Sudan continue to recount with gratitude the contributions of Dr Nkrumah, towards the liberation of the continent," Dr Osman said, during an interaction with newsmen, after touring the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra.

Mr Kofi Attoh, leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress, led the team to the awe-inspiring monument, erected for the first President.

Dr Osman who is the head of a three-man Sudanese government, delegation is in the country to seek government's support for the political situation in the North African state. The delegation includes; Abdul Hamid an official of the ruling party; the Sudan National Congress Party, and Sadiq Elamin, a diplomat. Dr Osman commended Ghana for its achievements and political gains, adding: "As we prepare for elections this year, we need to learn from experienced African Countries such as Ghana." A tour guide told the delegates that Dr. Nkrumah was overthrown by a military coup in 1966, after he had ruled for nine years. He then went to exile in the Republic of Guinea. He fell ill and died in Bucharest, Romania 1972, where he went to seek medical treatment.

He explained that Dr Nkrumah's body was buried in Guinea since he was the Co-president there. After 20 years of his death, Dr. Nkrumah's image was restored in July 1, 1992 on the same grounds where he led Ghana to liberation from colonialism on March 6, 1957.

In side the Nkrumah Mausoleum were the personal effects and publications of Dr Nkrumah and pictures showing his life history - which includes Dr. Nkrumah with some of the most famous people of his time. Notable among them were pictures with Jawaharlal Nehru of India, Mao Zedong of China, Fidel Castro, Cuba Nikita Khrushchev, Russia, John F Kennedy of the US, Sir Alec Hume, Britain, Queen Elizabeth II of England, Pope Pius XII and President Nasser of Egypt. The delegation also toured the Dubios Memorial Centre. 20 Jan. 10
