The Minority Spokesman on Energy and Member of Parliament (MP) for Bibiani in the Western Region, Hon. Seidu Paakuna Adamu, has dared Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby, former chief executive of the Volta River Authority (VRA), to carry out his threat and sue him now, because he was ever ready to battle with him at the law courts.
"Dr. Wereko-Brobby is only trying to use legal threat to gag me but I am not the sort of person who could be intimidated in such a way. He must sue me now because I am ready for him," Adamu said.
Speaking in an interview via his cell phone from far away Bibiani, where he is currently mourning his dead mother, Hon. Adamu said he was not scared at all with the ex-chief executive's legal threat because he could not use the court as an instrument to gag him as an MP or prevent him from performing his constitutional duties.
He vowed that whether Dr. Wereko-Brobby sued him or not he would still move a motion in parliament for a parliamentary committee to be set up to investigate the running of the VRA over the years, especially the acquisition of the Strategic Reserve Plant (SRP).
"It is within the purview of parliament to investigate the VRA and I am going to make sure, of course, with the support of the minority that the parliamentary committee has been set up to investigate the VRA," he said, and added that Dr. Wereko-Brobby's threat to sue him would not scare him from doing that.
According to the MP, the government set up three different committees to investigate the VRA and came out with a report but the government was refusing to make public that indeed there were some irregularities, especially in the acquisition of the SRP.
He regretted that instead of the government taking stern action on the report, it chose to exonerate Dr. Wereko-Brobby, but went ahead to interdict some directors who worked on the acquisition of the SRP even though they worked under Dr. Wereko-Brobby as their then chief executive.
Hon. Adamu noted that the problem that has arisen over the acquisition of the SRP came as a result of poor negotiation skills on the part of the VRA management with General Electric.
According to him, they did not do what he described as proper network analysis, which should have included the financial plan, before they entered into the contract.
He said despite all these shortcomings, the government absolved Dr. Wereko- Brobby from any wrongdoing but he later resigned from his position as VRA chief executive.
To him, the government appeared to have put the personality of Dr. Charles Wereko Brobby above that of the state, which, he thinks,was very bad.
Adamu continued that all that he was interested in was the setting up of the parliamentary committee to look into the issue and unravel the inefficiency in the system for it to be corrected in the interest of the state.
"If this is what Dr. Wereko-Brobby wants to stop me from doing with his much publicized threat to sue me, I can assure him that I am not scared at all. He can go ahead to sue me even now," he told The Chronicle.
Dr. Wereko-Brobby recently was quoted in some publications in a section of the media where he threatened to sue the unbending Chronicle and Hon. Seidu Adamu over specific allegations they made against him in their earlier publications.
Hon. Adamu's allegation was actually premised on his recent statement he issued in his capacity as the minority spokesman on energy, where he made some comments on the ongoing VRA saga that eventually led to the resignation of Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby.
