Accra Metropolitan Assembly Puts 'Action Plan' in Progress

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Task Force last Saturday had a scuffle with sugarcane sellers numbering about eight on the Kaneshie -Mallam Highway when the former tried to stop them from selling on the street.

Some police officers intervened to save the Task Force from further beatings by the sugarcane sellers who were armed with knives and cutlasses. One of them was arrested but the others managed to run away.

The Task Force who were on their Saturday routine monitoring as stated in the AMA "Action Plan" started from the Ashiedu Keteke Sub-Metro. As part of measures to keep the City clean the Task Force move from Sub-metro to Sub-metro to make sure traders clean their surroundings.

Ten traders were summoned on Saturday for improper display of wastewater, display and sale of cylinders and burners on walkways.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of AMA, Mr. Solomon Ofei Darko said there is a bye-law that says, "wherever you are selling, you clean the place". AMA is therefore trying to educate traders on the bye-laws.

He said some traders were fined ?six million each for selling on pavements. Mr. Solomon Ofei Darko hinted that new bye-laws are to be enacted next week. The bye-laws he said would put a ban on the sale of food on Ceremonial Streets, road blocks erected without permit from AMA.

He said roads could only be blocked on permit from AMA under the supervision of the police.
