Suhum MCE’s political road marks condemned

A group calling itself the Suhum Youth Communication Wing has demanded that the Municipal Chief Executive for Suhum Kraboa Coaltar remove all political inscriptions splashed on the streets in the area, about her parliamentary aspirations.

The MCE, who is also contesting as a Member of Parliament on the ticket of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2016 parliamentary elections, is alleged to have had ‘Magoo for Suhum 2016’ painted on many roads in her constituency.

But the group, led by Daniel Osei, has kicked against the MCE’s campaign strategy, saying it is illegal and making driving difficult for motorists.

Speaking with Obeng Mensah on Accra News on Tuesday May 10, Mr Osei explained further the reasons for the group’s demands: “If we look at the Road Traffic 2004 Act 687 Section 22, it explicitly states that no individual, or organisation can arrogate to himself the power to make inscriptions on roads.”

He said Mrs Osei’s name was written all over road surfaces there and the drivers had expressed discomfort as the writings have blurred all road markings.

Members of the group threatened that if Mrs Osei failed to have the markings wiped off the roads, they would also daub the streets with campaign messages for their preferred candidates.

“If you don’t comply with the law, we will also take the law into our hands,” Mr Osei threatened.

Asked if the group had presented a petition to the Urban Roads Department in the area regarding the paintings on the roads, the leader of the group replied in the negative, but said staff of the Department themselves cannot claim not to have seen the inscriptions.
