Millicent Yeboah Amankwah, the Sunyani West Parliamentary Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections, has expressed worry about the ‘sudden’ change of the venue of the constituency collation center.
She, therefore, called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to “revert the collation centre back to its original location.”
Addressing a news conference in Odomase, the constituency capital, Millicent Yeboah Amankwah said the change of venue from the old Municipal Assembly Hall to the Odumaseman Senior High School (ODASS) dining hall had no clear justification.
“The NDC will oppose any last-minute attempts by the EC to alter the process of the election or take any decision without informing the key stakeholders,” she insisted, pointing out that the “previous collation centre of the old Municipal Assembly Hall is more secured and suitable than the ODASS dining hall.”
Ms Amankwah explained that the new collation center, the “ODASS dining hall’s proximity to the bush leading to Odumase Cemetery, along with its lack of proper fencing, raises significant security concerns on the Election Day.”
She expressed concern about poor lighting systems at the ODASS school premises, particularly around the dining hall area, which she added could compromise the security of the collation process.
“Comparatively, the old Assembly hall’s proximity to the Sunyani West Municipal police station at Odomase makes it a more suitable location,” she stated.
Millicent Amankwah said, “The NDC is dissatisfied with the EC for changing the collation centre at the crucial stage of the General Election,” she stated, citing that poor security at the new collation centre could potentially undermine the integrity of the electoral process in the constituency.
“It has come to our attention that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has allegedly allocated the teacher’s staff common room at ODASS as the party’s collation centre too,” she stated, and added that “that unilateral decision has the potential to escalate tensions and create suspicions in the constituency”.
“The NDC vehemently opposes any actions that threaten the prevailing peace and stability the constituency has long enjoyed during general elections,” Ms Amankwah reaffirmed and urged the EC and National Security to rescind the decision and maintain the old collation center in the supreme interest of peace.
