The Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti, Eric Asubonteng has advised the newly inducted surveyors to take advantage of the country’s low infrastructural development to exercise their professionalism.

According to Mr. Asubonteng, although Ghana has low infrastructural development, it is fast becoming an urbanized country and professional surveyors will be sought after.

“Unlike developed countries, the low infrastructural development, as well as rapid urbanization and its attendant socio-economic and environmental challenges, present a huge opportunity to the surveying profession,” he stated.

He gave this advice at the induction ceremony of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors, Wednesday, February 2020.

Mr. Asubonteng stressed the need for surveyors to be able to access and use advanced technologies as they exercise their duties.

“Unfortunately, however as a country, we have not been able to use available technologies to address the challenges that we face. The perennial flooding in Accra, the galamsey menace, rampant carnage from accidents on our roads, untimely failure of construction works, land conflicts and land registration challenges continue to plague us as a nation,” he said.

He, however, admitted that solving these problems is not the sole responsibility of surveyors, plays a key role in dealing with the issue.

"The solution to these problems cannot be found with surveyors only but it surely can begin with you. Controlling and managing physical spaces, it is believed provides the basis of distribution of power, wealth, opportunities, and human wellbeing. The role of the surveyor in addressing these challenges cannot be overemphasized," he concluded.
