Suspect 'disappears' from cells...Tribunal demands answer from police

In a screaming front-page headline story, the Ghanaian Times reports that the mysterious escape of a Togolese chainsaw operator from the custody of the Nkwanta Police in the Volta Region, is causing a serious public outcry in the Nkwanta District.

The Times says the Nkwanta Community Tribunal has vowed not to let the matter rest, and is demanding an explanation from the police as to why the suspect cannot be arraigned before the court.

The story says that the suspect and his tools 'vanished' from the custody of the police. The Togolese, Nyakofre Kwaku, is said to have been arrested on August 4, this year, in a joint operation by the Ghana Wildlife and Forestry Departments in the Kyabobo National Park, where he had felled two trees and cut them into 62 pieces.

According to the Times, apart from his chainsaw, Kwaku was also in possession of a jack, assorted tools for the chainsaw, an umbrella and two gallons of petrol.

The suspect, together with the items, are said to have been handed over to the Nkwanta Police for onward prosecution.
