Suspected armed robbers remanded in prison custody

Sekondi, Oct. 18, GNA - A Sekondi High Court on Monday remanded three suspected armed robbers in prison custody for stealing mobile phones and cash from over 40 travelers.

They were Wahab Amidu, 25, unemployed, Musah Mohammed, 20, Herdsman and Issa Abubacar, 29, a hawker.

Mr. William Kpobi, a Principal State Attorney told the court, presided over by Mr. Clemence J. Honyenugah that on August 29, this year, around 1 am, the accused persons and others, now at large, mounted two roadblocks on the main Takoradi to Tarkwa highway at a spot between Nsuaem and Essaman.

They allegedly stopped over 14 vehicles at gun point, ordered the passengers to disembark and collected various monies, ornaments, mobile phones and other items and made the victims to lie on the road. Mr. Kpobi said one Anthony Nyamekye-Edule, alias P.K. on reaching the spot in his Urvan bus left his engine running but was asked to "quench the light and kill the engine" by Abubacar.

The prosecutor said, while he was being asked to hand over his vehicle keys, cash and mobile phone, the passengers were also ordered to surrender their possessions.

Mr. Kpobi said the group then loaded their booty into Mr. Nyamekye-Edule's bus with registration number WR 1181 S and sped-off. The victims managed to inform the Police at the Apremdo barrier and the Kwesiminstim Police.

Mr. Kpobi said the vehicle was found abandoned in a bush near Agona Nkwanta with the fan belt destroyed.

He said the Police on hearing the report searched every vehicle that plied the road and the three were arrested in three separate vehicles, based on the description of dresses they wore for the operation.

Mr. Kpobi said they were again identified in a public identification parade at the Kwesiminstim Police Station.
