Suspects escape from police custody.

Six out of Seven suspects in police custody at Dzodze for committing various offences, have escaped from the police cells at Dzodze, after breaking a padlock locking the metal gate.

The escapees also took away an AK 47 rifle left under the counter at the police charge office.

They are Dzifa Abusah, 40, an ex-soldier, believed to be the brain behind the escape and the theft of the rifle, Christian Abusah,37, a cousin of Dzifa, Besa Seke 30, Kobla Ganyo, 27, Kweku Homadzi, 30 and Kwame Kotoka 28. So far only Kotoka has been re-arrested.

Police Chief Inspector Enoch Adjatey, station officer at Dzodze, told the Ghana News Agency, that at about 9.30 am on Thursday, November 23, a Corporal who was on duty, went to the washroom.

He said a constable, who remained behind also left the charge office to seek clarification from a senior colleague on some cases he was booking in the station file. Chief Inspector Adjatey said when the constable was returning a few minutes later he saw some movements in the charge office and realised that they were the suspects detained in the cell.

He said the constable saw Dzifa Abusah brandishing the AK 47 rifle and ordering the other suspects to move out one after the other. Chief Inspector Adjatey said the constable shouted to alert other officers, but before they could be apprehended the suspects had bolted.

He said Dzifa Adjatey who is "wanted" by the Togolese security agencies for various offences had earlier escaped from custody at Dzodze and was re-arrested at Ashaiman. Kotoka, who was arrested, would be put on trial, for escaping from lawful custody. Mr Samuel Seme Wodah, Superintendent of police in charge of Keta divisional police command confirmed the incident and expressed surprise at the failure of the public to assist the police in re-arresting the suspects on that day.
