Parliament’s Privileges Committee has recommended that the house suspend Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, for describing parliament as “cheap” and “useless”.

Parts of the recommendation said the NPP MP must be sanctioned “by suspending him for the rest of this session or reprimand him.”

“The committee has carefully considered the matter in the light of the totality of the evidence gathered and in accordance with the provisions of the constitution, the Standing Orders and other relevant enactments and concluded that the Hon. Member of for Assin Central Constituency, Mr. Ken Ohene Agyapong is indeed in contempt of Parliament for the remarks he made that ‘Parliament is cheap’ and ‘Parliament is useless’.”

When he appeared before the committee for the second time, Mr Agyapong said the evidence presented to parliament against him for contempt, was doctored.

“The whole thing” is doctored, Mr Agyapong insisted on Monday, 23 July during the hearing.

He wondered why he was given two separate videos from two radio stations about what he was purported to have said for which he has been accused of dragging the name of the house and its Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, into disrepute, thus, the contempt hearing.

“Which is which?” he asked the committee chaired by First Deputy Speaker Joe Osei-Owusu.

Mr Agyapong, nonetheless apologised to parliament for describing the house as “cheap” when asked by committee member Nii Lantey Vanderpuye as to whether he felt the description was appropriate.

He, however, denied ever describing parliament as “useless”. “I don’t mind retracting that word [cheap] but I want to say that I never said parliament was useless”, adding that: “I’m not a tin god”.

“You can kill me today but I will never admit that I said that parliament is useless”, he told the house.
