The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Akufo-Addo has said although suspending the party’s national chairman and general secretary Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong respectively was “regrettable”, it is about time the Elephant family moved on.

The Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition has suspended some of its national executives including its second vice chairman Sammy Crabbe over separate acts of misconducts.

Nana Addo, who revealed that he “abstained” during the national executive committee’s voting over the suspension, said he has “no difficulties at all” with Agyepong in particular.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana show on Tuesday, the former foreign affairs minister said: “These decisions have been taken by national executives of our party and were unanimous.

“The suspensions are regretted, but now is the time to move forward. The decision to suspend some executives are not capricious, but were done to bring harmony and purity to the work of the party.”

According to Nana Addo, who is eyeing the presidency for the third time running, he has always seen himself as “a vehicle for bringing understanding” within the largest opposition party, but once that approach failed to work, he was forced to side with the NEC.

“I don’t have any problem with any of the suspended national officers,” Nana Addo told host Paul Adom Otchere.

Afoko, Agyepong and Crabbe are all on indefinite suspension.
