Mr Musah Abdulai, Municipal Chief Executive of Bawku on Thursday said the restoration of peace in Bawku and its environs rested in the hands of the people in the area.
He said the violence that erupted in 2007 was regrettable, indicating that the relative peace that the area currently enjoyed was as a result of developmental projects and interventions put in place by the government.
He said government had facilitated the establishment of the Bawku Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee with the core responsibility of establishing permanent and lasting peace in the area.
Mr Abdulai made the assertion when he addressed a durbar of chiefs and people of Bawku during an outreach programme initiated by Mr Mark Woyongo, Upper East Regional Minister to highlight some developmental projects the district had embarked on since 2009.
He stated that despite the numerous challenges confronting the committee, it had with other stakeholders managed to restore relative peace in Bawku.
He noted that the establishment of a military camp at Bazua had enhanced security in the Municipality and the region as a whole, adding that, the Assembly had awarded a contract for the construction of two police stations to be situated at Pusiga and Binduri at a total cost of GH¢113,051.33.
He commended the West Africa Network for Peace (WANEP) and the Upper East Caucus of members of Parliament, the Bawku Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee, the Regional Minister, Security Agencies, the Media and the people of Bawku for helping to maintain peace over the years
The MCE said the National Democratic Congress’s commitment to ensuring peace and security in the area before, during and after the 2012 parliamentary and presidential elections.**
