The three midwives at the centre of the saga of

Suwaiba Abdul Mumin’s missing baby from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital

(KATH) are still insisting that the baby was born dead and accidentally burnt

by a labourer at the hospital.

Appearing before the Disciplinary Committee of the

Nurses & Midwives Council’s chaired by Mrs. Denkyi of the Attorney General’s

department, the three midwives insist Baba Asibi accidentally burnt the dead

baby after it had been placed in a box waiting to be conveyed to the morgue of

the hospital.

The three, who were accompanied to the hearing by

two lawyers, were however reminded by a member of the 9-member committee that

Baba Asibi had told the police in Kumasi after he was arrested that it was not

true he accidentally burnt the baby. The labourer claimed that he never saw any

dead baby in a box as claimed by the midwives and therefore did not burn

anything.

Baba was supposed to be at the hearing but is

reported to have stayed away based on the advice of his lawyer since he was

already on trial before a Kumasi court.

The midwives, according to sources, could not say

anything when reminded about what Baba Asibi had told the police.

Present at the hearing with her lawyer was Suwaiba

Abdul Mumin and some of her family members. According to sources, she sat

quietly throughout the proceedings. The committee will continue its sittings

today.
