Mr Abubakar Alhasan, Assemblyman for Old Zongo Electoral Area at Agona Swedru has presented five bundles of Aluminium roofing sheets to 15 rainstorm victims at Agona Swedru.
Their buildings were ripped off in last Wednesday’s rainstorm, which hit the Swedru Township and are currently putting up with relatives and friends.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview at Agona Swedru on Friday, Mr Alhasan said some of the houses had been weakened and needed to be rebuilt.
According to him the sheets were bought from his own resources.
The Assemblyman said the victims have not received assistance from any organization or corporate bodies even though the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) had been informed about the plight of the affected people.
Mr Alhasan appealed to the government to assist the Assembly to enable it to offer assistance to disaster victims.
The Assemblyman also launched an educational endowment fund with a seed capital of GH¢2,000 to assist needy but brilliant children in the area to have equal access to education.
According to the Assemblyman most children in the Zongo community could not make it to higher educational institutions due to financial constraints facing their parents.
He appealed to the non-governmental organizations, corporate bodies, philanthropists, development partners and individuals to contribute towards the fund.
He appealed to Muslim parents to endeavour to invest in their children’s education since education is the only panacea to poverty alleviation.**
