Agona Swedru, Oct 15, GNA - The Authorities of the Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS) on Friday, appealed to the government and the Agona District Assembly to provide the school with infrastructure befitting its status as a second cycle institution.
According to them the school, since it was taken over by the government about 40 years ago, still had no assembly hall, compelling the general meeting of students to be held under "Lucinia" trees. Mr. Kojo Opare-Essel, Headmaster, made this known when Mr. Ben Mensah, Agona District Chief Executive, Mr. Chris Dowuona Hammond, District Director of Education and Mr G.B.L. Silo, out-going District Coordinating Director, interacted with the Headmaster and tutors after presenting a 29 inch-Television set to the school.
TV Sets are being supplied to first and second cycle institutions to facilitate the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Science through distance education.
The Swedru School of Business, Swedru Secondary School, Kayak Secondary/Technical and the Agona Amino SDA A and B Junior Secondary Schools were the first beneficiaries of a consignment of 25. Mr Opare-Essel said the school had not seen any major rehabilitation of old structures or new one provided since the government took over the institution.
He regretted that a boys' dormitory approved by the Agona District Assembly for the school last year was diverted to another school in the district.
The Headmaster pointed out that the access road linking the school to the Swedru/Bawdiest road had been neglected for more than 20 years despite persistent appeals.
Mr. Opare-Essel stated that the vocational block and a teachers' bungalow started 10 years ago by the Ministry of Education and Sports had been abandoned.
He said the boys' dormitory being funded under the GETFUND was progressing at a slow pace and regretted that the school, which produced the national best student in 2002, was in such deplorable condition. Mr. Silo explained that the Assembly diverted the Boys' dormitory project to Swedru Secondary School when it heard that that GETFUND had approved a similar facility for the school.
He gave the assurance that the Assembly would help improve conditions at the school by constructing new buildings next year, adding this would be taken care of in next year's budget. Mr. Mensah urged the students to study hard to enable them chalk success in life.
He said the government was committed to ensuring that every child got quality education to enhance national development. He asked the beneficial schools to take good care of the TV sets to serve the purpose they were meant for.
