The host of the Good Morning Ghana programme on Metro TV, Randy Abbey, has identified three categories of people who support President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on the subject of his preferred choice of successor.
The president is on record to have stated twice that he would not hand over to someone he had defeated twice at the polls, referring to former president John Dramani Mahama.
According to Randy Abbey, some Akufo-Addo supporters genuinely believe he was right to make the particular statement.
One such was a co-panellist on the programme, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker for Tema Central Yves Hans Nii Noi Nortey, who said Akufo-Addo was expressing a wish.
The other two categories Randy Abbey pointed out were dishonest sycophants and lastly, persons who were delusional.
Responding to veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt's concern that close aides of the president did not seem to deem it fit to point out the danger of his views on his own legacy and chances of his preferred successor, Randy said:
"There are those who disagree with the position you (Pratt) hold and believe in the president's position. They think that there is no problem with the president saying what he said the way he said it.
"Two, there are those who are dishonest and sycophantic and three, is the dangerous one, those who have become delusional," he added.
"So I don't know which of the three you are dealing with at every point in time," he told Pratt who serially lamented the unwarranted nature of the comment.
"If you have a president surrounded by delusional people we are in extreme danger. If he is surrounded by sycophants, we are heading into a ditch, the third category leads us into the same trench," Pratt submitted.
What Akufo-Addo Said:
President Akufo-Addo, while addressing supporters at a mini rally at Doboro in the Greater Accra Region, repeated his assertion that the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, former President John Dramani Mahama, cannot be the person to succeed him.
He said that the NDC flagbearer would destroy all the gains his government has made if he came into power again, a 3news.com report stated.
“The registration has started; I urge all persons yet to register to do so, your vote is your power.
“I can't hand over to someone I defeated twice and who is not happy with everything I do; he will destroy the work that I have done,” he said.
He added, “Vote for Dr Bawumia; I have worked with him for the past seven and a half years, I have confidence in him, I know he can continue the good work.”
The view has serially been criticized by among others; opposition politicians, academics and some members of civil society; all of whom insist it is not democratic given that the president cannot determine the winner of the 2024 polls.
