Sekondi, June 11, GNA - A magistrate's court in Sekondi on Monday adjourned the case involving 64 students of the Takoradi Polytechnic to June 25.
The students including six females are facing trial on charges of rioting with offensive weapons and engaging the police in a confrontation on June 1. Their plea has not been taken.
Police Chief Inspector Joseph Hedidor told the court that the request for a weeklong adjournment was to allow the police some extras time to conclude their investigations. The students appeared before the court on June 4 this year and were granted 30 million cedis bail each.
Additionally, each student was to report to the Takoradi Central Police every Monday and Friday until the case was disposed of. Students of Takoradi Polytechnic on May 31, this year, led by executives of the Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students (GNUPS) declared an indefinite boycott of all academic work at the Polytechnic campus with effect from Thursday May 31. They also called for the immediate dismissal of the Principal, Dr. Samuel Obeng Apori and accused him of "being incompetent, arrogant and autocratic". The school has been closed down indefinitely and a joint police/military patrol is guarding the school compound.
