Provocative T-Shirts with inscriptions apparently to mock the petitioners in the 2012 election petition case before the Supreme Court has sprung up in the Western Region.
The T-Shirts, mostly in black and white colours, have inscriptions emanating from some of the words which were frequently used during the hearing of the petition.
Some of the inscriptions boldly embossed on the back and front of the T-Shirts include “You And I Were Not There”, “Declare Me President At All Cost”, “Dr. Pink Sheets”, “Polling Agents Equals Exalted Observer”, “Pink Sheet Analysis Is Quadruplicate”.
The revelation of the printing of those T-shirts which had the potential of fomenting trouble was made by the National Commission for Civil Education (NCCE), which said it had identified the circulation of the T-Shirts in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis and the Wassa East District.
Unfortunately, the NCCE has not been able to trace the source.
Addressing a press conference in Sekondi on Friday, the Western Regional Director of the NCCE, Mr. Alphonsus Arthur, condemned the circulation and wearing of such T-Shirts.
He described the inscriptions as insinuative and inflammatory, which had the potential to inflame passion and cause mayhem, especially after the final verdict of the Supreme Court.
He said ensuring peace and unity in the country was paramount, therefore, any action which could destabilize the peace should be condemned and averted with any uncertainty.
He, therefore, called on the security agencies to be on the alert to clamp down on persons who would attempt to foment trouble in the country, adding that: “if these T-Shirts can destabilize the peace we are all seeking for, then I think the Police should take it up”.
He said the NCCE would also investigate and find the source of such T-Shirts.
Mr. Arthur said the NCCE would continue to discharge its constitutional mandate of educating the public on their responsibilities, privileges and rights.
