Textile Garment and Leather Employees
The Textile, Garment and Leather Employees’ Union (TEGLU) has served notice of a planned demonstration on Wednesday, 12 July, 2017 against government’s inability to publish policy guidelines to regulate the importation and sale of African textile prints into the country.
In addition to the demonstration, the group said it would also picket the Ministry of Trade and Industry on 13 July 2017 to drum home their concerns.
According to TEGLU, they had planned to demonstrate against government but called it off when they were assured by the Ministry of Trade and Industry that their grievances would be handled.
The group said the Ministry had promised to publish policy guidelines to regulate importation and sale of African textile prints to forestall counterfeiting, smuggling, and dumping of the fabrics to curtail the unbridled flooding of the market with fake products which had over the years destroyed the local manufacturing industry to the detriment of workers and the Ghanaian economy.
But according to TEGLU, the deadline given by the ministry for the release of the policy was 30 June, 2017, but all efforts by their union to get explanation for the undue delays have proven futile.
To this end, TEGLU said it is compelled to express its frustrations by organising 300 workers to demonstrate on Wednesday 12 July, 2017 and 50 workers to picket the forecourt of the Ministry of Trade and Industry on 13 July 2017.
