NEWSPAPER ACCUSATION AGAINST HON. AMBROSE DERY – MP FOR LAWRA-NANDOM AND DEPUTY MINORITY LEADER IN PARLIAMENT

Good afternoon, gentlemen of the press.

Sorry for inviting you at a short notice. We invited you this afternoon to react to some media accusations against Hon. Ambrose Dery to the effects that he is against the establishment of universities in both the Brong Ahafo and Volta regions of Ghana.

It should be recalled that on Sunday, 6th February, 2011, the University for Development Studies UDS, Wa campus branch of TESCON organised a general meeting. The occasion was also used to launch TESCON branded ‘T’ shirts. At this very occasion, various party functionaries were invited to grace the occasion including the leadership of TEIN. Hon. Ambrose Dery stated emphatically that president Evans Fiifi Atta Mills should ensure that the singular golden venture of establishing universities in the Brong Ahafo and Volta regions never became a farce. He urged the president to marshall all the necessary resources for the smooth commencement of teaching and learning in these universities within the shortest possible time. He also urged the government to ensure that the right infrastructure is provided for the Wa campus of UDS for smooth teaching and learning. He reminded government of a similar venture when on 31st July, 2010; the vice president did a similar sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a regional hospital in Wa. As we speak today, there is no action on this exercise.

It therefore came as a surprise to TESCON, UDS, Wa campus that some media houses, especially the “INFORMER” newspaper carried a front page story captioned: “B.A, VOLTA DON’T DESERVE UNIVERSITIES. AMBROSE DERY” in their Wednesday, 9th February, 2011 edition. This, in our candid opinion is a calculated attempt to discredit the hard-won reputation of the affable Deputy Minority Leader and MP for Lawra-Nandom.

We equally find it difficult to ascertain what the INFORMER newspaper wanted to achieve in all of this mischief. Instead of representing the facts on the ground and being circumspect, patriotic and nationalistic, they rather choose to be mischievous with the singular attempt to discredit the hard-won reputation of the minority leader, Hon Ambrose Dery.

However, we take solace in the fact that the INFORMER newspaper has the penchant for maligning and discrediting personalities who worked hard to distinguished themselves in their various carriers and professions. If the motive of the paper is to score cheap political points and divide the country along tribal lines, then we assure them that on this occasion, they have failed.

Contrary to the assertion of the INFORMER newspaper, Hon. Ambrose Dery emphasised on the need for unity, national cohesiveness and the fair distribution of national resources. He went further to commend the TEIN delegation led by their president for responding to the invitation of their colleague TESCON members and urged all Ghanaians to emulate the cordial relationship between TESCON and TEIN members for national development. How can the same Hon. Ambrose Dery turn round to preach against the establishment of universities in the Volta and Brong Ahafo region?

We believe that either the INFORMER newspaper does not have a correspondent in the region or the correspondent is a charlatan masquerading as a journalist, hence this misrepresentation. We therefore call on the INFORMER newspaper and their likes to act professionally and be circumspect in their reportage.

TESCON-NPP believes in the equitable distribution of resources and as such we are not in any way against the establishment of universities in either of these regions or their development. But rather this is actually in line with our party’s objective.
