TEWU and FUSSAG call off strike action

Legon, July 9, GNA - The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association (FUSSAG), on Friday called off their strike action to demand better conditions of service.

The stalemate ended, following a directive given by Professor Kwadwo Asenso-Okyere, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon, and Chairman of the Vice-Chancellors' of Ghana (VCG), authorizing heads of the state universities, to pay salary arrears with effect from January, 2004.

Mr Peter Lumor, Legon branch chairman of TEWU, who addressed a general rally of the Union, on Friday, called on the workers to reciprocate the upward adjustment of salaries by working hard. He assured the workers, that, TEWU would negotiate for the restoration of their End-of-Year Benefits that was frozen by the past administration of the National Democratic Congress.

The red and black flags hoisted by the workers at the entrance of the University of Ghana, to back their demand for improved conditions of service have been lowered.
