TEWU expresses commitment to support gov’t

Mr Alfred Amponsah, the Eastern Regional Chairman of the Teachers and Educational Workers' Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has affirmed the union's commitment to assist the government to achieve its aim to deliver free and quality education to children in the country.

He urged government to honour its part of the social contract, by giving workers their share of the national cake and other incentives, to increase productivity.

Mr Amponsah was speaking at the Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the Eastern Regional branch of TEWU on the theme: "Quality Education, The Role of Educational Workers in Eastern Region" in Koforidua.

He implored members of TEWU to take advantage of the study leave policy of theGhana Education Service (GES), and further their education.

Mr Emmanuel Osei Amponsah, the Regional Accountant of GES, urged members of TEWU to show professionalism, competence and be objective in their work to enhance productivity.

Mr Amponsah urged the union workers to be productive to ensure that their desired motivation from government would be achieved.

Mr Raph Apaaya, the National General Secretary of TEWU, urged government to take a second look at the second tier pension scheme, to ensure that workers got good retirement benefits after service.

He urged government to bring back overtime, motor and car maintenance allowances, which had been scrapped, since the inception of the single spine salary structure, adding that, it was part of the conditions of service of workers.

Mr Apaya urged the delegates to talk about issues that would help improve education in the country.

Mr Peter Kwaku Lumor, the National Chairman of TEWU, urged members to increase their contributions to the TEWU Fund, which served as a life line for the union members, and urged the members to have an insurance cover.
