GRI "After the National Economic Forum...NPP still opposed to VAT", is the headline of a back page story in the Guide which says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has noted with regret the confusion that occurred at the National Economic Forum over the re-introduction of the Value Added Tax (VAT). The Guide says in a statement dated September 5 1997 and signed by the party's General Secretary, Mr Joseph Agyenim-Boateng, the NPP noted that all reports indicate that the NPP's fears about the genuiness about the Forum were justified when attempts were made to impose a non-existent consensus on delegates on the re-introduction of VAT. The paper says for this reason, at a National Executive Committee meeting of the NPP chaired by Mr Peter Ala Adjetey, National Chairman, the party decided to clarify its position on the VAT for the benefit of the general public and in particular, the party supporters. "The NPP is resolutely opposed to the re-introduction of VAT. The party is firm in its conviction that the average Ghanaian will be unable to bear any additional burden in the very harsh economic conditions in which heor she is compelled to exist", the Guide quoted Mr Agyenim-Boateng as saying.
