Aboadze (W/R), Oct. 29, GNA - One hundred students from the Shama-Aboazde area in the Shama District were the lucky beneficiaries of "Kramers" scholarships instituted by the Takoradi International Company (TICO), an energy producing company, to support brilliant but needy students in its catchments area. Cheques worth 20,000 dollars were distributed to the beneficiaries who were students from the basic, junior high and senior high schools and also from the tertiary institutions at an impressive ceremony at Aboadze on Tuesday.

In 2007-2008 academic year 68 students were presented with scholarships by TICO under the Kramers scholarship programme. Nana Osafo Adjei Kantanka, General Manager of TICO, said the awards scheme that was instituted in 1976 as part of its corporate responsibility had assisted many people to pursue higher education. Nana Kantanka called for greater cooperation between TICO and the people of the area to enhance the area's development. Mrs. Angelina Baiden-Ammisah, Deputy Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Shama, commended TICO for its efforts to supplement government's efforts to ensure steady development of the area.

She said TICO's support to the communities in the provision of modern infrastructure to enhance education and health was commendable and advised beneficiaries of the scholarship to take advantage of the scheme to acquire higher education. Mr. Evan Anthony Amoah, Western Regional Minister, spoke about values of education in human resource development and advised students to make the best use of any opportunity that came their way. "Whatever you want to do in the future depends on what you do today", Mr. Amoah said, adding that the acquisition of higher education was the best form of security for a better life in future. Mr. Richard Badger, Volta River Authority Acting Director in charge of thermal generation, said with the institution of the "Kramers" scholarship programme, TICO had consistently displayed that it holds in high esteem the value of education of the youth to enable them to provide leadership in the area.
