Accra, Jan 13, GNA - The Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA) and Greenwich Council have pledged to enhance the capabilities of teachers and students in the municipality to improve education in the area. The Greenwich Council has promised to assist the TMA to plan for the construction of Tema Sports Stadium towards the development of sports in the municipality.
Mr John Fahy, Councillor of the Greenwich Council of the United Kingdom, announced these when he led a seven-member delegation to pay a courtesy call on the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Armah Ashietey at the Regional Coordinating Council in Accra on Wednesday. The call was to renew and strengthen the 10-year old sister-city relationship between the two authorities and to explore areas of cooperation which would be of mutual benefit to Tema and Greenwich. Mr Fahy said the Greenwich Council, through the British Council in Accra, would include schools within the TMA in a project that seeks to assist students to benefit from UK exchange programmes. He said this was to improve the lives and chances of the students to enable them to realize their full potential.
Nii Ashietey assured the Greenwich Council of support for its efforts to assist the TMA to implement the projects. He said Tema was a commercial town with many business activities which required strategies to improve the living conditions of the residents. Nii Ashietey said "Metropolitan, Municipal and District assemblies have a duty to develop and improve the living conditions of the people". He congratulated the Greenwich Council and the Councillor for their efforts to strengthen their relationship with the TMA. Nii Ashietey brokered the sister-city relations with the Greenwich Council in 2000, which led to the formation of the Tema Greenwich Foundation, an arm championing the implementation of strategies for the benefit of both cities when he was Mayor of TMA. Nii Nortey Duah, Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, said the stadium, if built would help develop other forms of sports especially the lesser known ones among the youth. Present at the meeting was Mr Kempes Ofosuware, Mayor of TMA. The fact that Tema and Greenwich lie on the same longitude, necessitated the sister-city relationship. 13 Jan. 10
