Tema, July 27, GNA - Members of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) have in a petition called on the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) to immediately halt the intended eviction of eleven governmental departments from its premises.

They noted that the exercise, if carried out would bring the administration of government machinery in the Metropolis to a standstill.

TDC on June 12, 2007 issued an ejection order to eleven government establishments operating from its premises to quit the buildings by May 31 this year.

The establishments include New Times Corporation, Rent Control, Land Title Registry, Judicial Service, Ghana Education Service and the Survey Department.

Others are the Department of Social Welfare, Department of Co-operatives, Statistical Service Department, Department of Culture and Community Development.

The petition was signed by the Metropolitan Coordinating Director, Mr Kwaku Akpotosu during their recent meetings to deliberate on the issue and addressed to the Managing Director of the TDC, Madam Mansah Banson. The meeting noted that, "much as the Assembly would not want to interfere in the operation of the TDC, members feel that the exercise would bring the administration of government machinery in the metropolis to a grinding halt".

The members asked the TDC to postpone the exercise while the necessary steps are taken to resettle the institutions in the shortest possible time.

Meanwhile the TMA has already provided offices for some of the institutions, while others such as the Metropolitan Education Directorate were still looking for appropriate alternative places.
