TMA receives 50 litterbins to check plastic waste

Tema, Nov. 17, GNA - The Tema Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Samuel Evans Ashong Narh, on Wednesday presented 50 pieces of litterbins worth 30 million cedis to the Assembly to support its sanitation programmes.

This was the collaborative effort of some manufacturers and sachet water producers to assist in the disposal of plastic waste especially in the municipality.

The MCE, in an address noted that people's attitude towards waste disposal is the main cause of filth in Tema and said provision of the bins alone could not promote sanitation if people refuse to use it effectively.

He however, urged the residents of Tema to be guided by the Vice President's campaign against indiscipline and to make good use of the facility by putting plastic and other waste in the bins to help keep the city clean.

He commended individuals and organisations, which have supported the Assembly in its efforts to ensure good sanitation in the area and urged others to emulate them.

The Chairman of the Environmental and the Sanitation Sub-committee of the Assembly, Mr. Ibrahim Aidoo, said the committee, as part of its measures to control the plastic waste menace in the municipality adopted two strategies, which included public education and placing of litterbins at vantage points in the municipality.

He said the committee consulted manufacturers and sachet water producers to help in this direction and as a result an amount of 50 million cedis was realised out of which 30 million cedis was used to purchase the bins.

He said the residents' behaviour towards the use of the facility would encourage the assembly to extend it to areas like Adenta and Ashaiman.
