The Trade Union Congress has proposed that the daily minimum wage ought to be increased to C5,500.

The Trade Union Congress has proposed that the daily minimum wage ought to be increased to C5,500. The TUC called for the current amount of C2, 900, which was fixed last year, to be increased as the result of inflation and its resultant negative effects on wages in the country. It has therefore recommended that the minimum wage be passed into law to ensure compliance and also for the minimum wages for subsequent years be fixed by the National tripartite Committee before the years’ budget is presented to Parliament. The TUC’s statements were contained in a proposal presented to the government for the determination of a new minimum wage. The TUC also added that, in coming up with its proposals, it took into consideration the 2.5 % increase in the VAT, increases in petroleum products, the rapid depreciation of the cedi, which has been affecting the prices of almost every commodity in the country.
