The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has renewed calls on Parliament to conduct an independent enquiry into the operations of trouble-stricken Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).
The TUC said in view of the alleged reports of malfeasance against the Trust, a probe will restore workers' confidence in the ability of the trust to ensure pension payments for workers who go on retirement.
The deputy Secretary-General of the TUC, Kofi Asamoah speaking at a meeting of the Congress said its concern for workers does not end when they go on retirement or ceases to contribute to the organisation because of ill health.
The efficient operation of the SSNIT Scheme, which, for now is the only source of pension for its numerous members, is of utmost importance to the Congress. It therefore called for a review of the scheme to ensure efficiency pension to workers.
Mr. Asamoah urged workers to update their records with SSNIT in respect of their beneficiaries to avoid undue problems on retirement.
Meanwhile the TUC has appealed to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Employment and Manpower Development to help fashion the new labour code into a worker-friendly law to safeguard the interest of workers.
The Secretary-General of the TUC, Kwasi Adu-Amankwah made the appeal when the committee paid a familiarisation visit to the TUC Headquarters, Accra for members to acquaint themselves with the structures and operations of the labour movement in promoting harmonious industrial relations.
The visit by the Committee is the first of its kind by a Parliamentary Committee.
Mr. Adu-Amankwah said the Congress constitutes an effective organisation to protect the rights of workers in the modern world of labour and the emerging globalisation.
"In this connection the TUC has been transformed over the years into such an effective organisation to help safeguard the interests of Ghanaian workers in their contribution towards building the nation," the Secretary-General stated.
