Taifa gets Post Office

Accra, Jan. 14, GNA - Dr Benjamin Aggrey-Ntim, Minister of Communications on Monday cut the sod for the construction of a GH=A2 158,000 post office and information and communication centre at Taifa Burkina in the Dome/Kwabenya constituency in Accra.

The single storey building facility, would include an Internet caf=E9. The project being undertaken by Messer Macano would be completed within six months.

Speaking at the function, Dr. Aggrey-Ntim said government was concerned about the even spread of development across the country that would impact positively on the lives of the people. Dr. Aggrey-Ntim said attention was equally being paid to the delivery of utilities to the peri-urban Areas in the Greater Accra Region.

He said Ghana Post Company Limited was poised to relate to communities to meet the universal service obligation. 'Government was going to provide post offices in the 230 constituencies adding, ninety of the post offices have been put up", he said. Professor Mike Ocquaye, Member Parliament for the Constituency said government was doing all it could to ensure that water project for the area and their environs was addressed.

He urged the youth in the area to go and register when the Voters's Register was opened next month. According to him that was the only way they could choose a candidate of their choice. The former Minister of Communications said he had personally donated a pick up vehicle to remind youth who will turn 18 years to go and register. Mr. Kofi Duah Adonten, Managing Director, Ghana Post Company Limited tasked the contractor to ensure that the project was completed within the 24 weeks duration.

He appealed to opinion leaders and residents to monitor the project so that it was completed within the stipulated time. Mr Kofi Allotey, District Chief Executive for Ga East said Information Communication Technology (ICT) was an important ingredient for the realization of Ghana's Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategy (GPRS II) According to Mr Allotey the initiative had come at an opportune time when the country was making strides in bridging the digital divide towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. "Government was committed to providing the needed resources to build the infrastructure base that will effectively support information Technology education in our schools and communities at large." He said the facility would not only enable the youth to prepare themselves to meet the challenges of the time but would also build their capacity to compete favourably in the global environment.
