Takoradi Polytechnic matriculates 2,411 students

Takoradi, Nov 10, GNA - Mr Anthony Evans Amoah, the Western Regional Minister, on Friday advised polytechnic students to strive to acquire skills that would enable them to perform creditably at their workplaces after their graduation.

Speaking at the 15th Matriculation ceremony of Takoradi Polytechnic in Takoradi, he said students should not only aim at obtaining academic qualification but must also adopt skills that would make it possible for them to work better.

"Acquisition of certificate is important but it is not the most important factor in education. What is important is students being able to deliver at their places of work on completing school." Dr Samuel Obeng Apori, the Principal of the Polytechnic, said out of 5,000 qualified students who applied to enter the Polytechnic, 2,411 including 714 females were given admission. He said for the 2005/2006 academic year, 25 students were sacked for examination malpractices and 65 dismissed for poor academic performance.

"The dismissal of students based on examination malpractices, poor academic performance and other vices will be an on-going exercise." He said at 1000 hours on November 4, three students were caught red smoking Indian hemp and they have been invited to face the Committee of the Academic Board.
