Takoradi market rehabilitation delays for four months

Sekondi, July 23, GNA - The rehabilitation of the burnt portions of the Takoradi Market has still not been completed four months after the deadline for its completion.

The delay has created the opportunity for traders and hawkers to take over pedestrian walkways, lorry parks and other open spaces near the Takoradi Market Circle.

Mr. John Laste, Public Relations Officer of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, told the GNA on Tuesday that Kingspok Construction Company, the contractors in charge of the rehabilitation works, had pledged to complete the work by August 16.

Mr. Laste said 200 stores and sheds were destroyed when a fire swept through the market last year.

He said the rehabilitated portions would serve as a temporary trading area because the assembly has plans to restructure the entire market to include offices, shopping malls, parking area, schools and banks.

Mr. Laste said the entire market would be closed down and the traders relocated to the Apremdo market to enable constructional works to begin.
